What is veracracy?

Veracracy — from veritas, truth, and kratos, rule: a form of governance whose legitimacy flows from verified knowledge — not from power, wealth, lineage, or whoever shouts loudest into the feed.

Democracies ask what do we want? Markets ask what will we pay? A veracracy adds the missing question and refuses to act before answering it: what do we actually know — and how do we know it? Not rule by experts; rule by evidence that anyone can inspect, deliberated by the people it binds.

• Truth as civic infrastructure. Verified, open evidence is maintained like roads and water — a public utility, with provenance, versioning, and repair crews.
• Radical transparency. Binding decisions carry their evidence trail by default. A law without its sources is a claim, not a law.
• Decentralised trust. No ministry of truth. Verification is plural, adversarial, and bridging — many checkers, no single owner, consensus that spans camps.
• Ethical AI as auditor and advocate. Machines that trace claims, surface contradictions, and argue against the powerful reading of the data — never as oracle, always as instrument.
• Participatory epistemocracy. Deliberation open to everyone, where weight accrues to evidence rather than volume. Citizens not as voters once every four years, but as standing jurors of what is true enough to act on.

The walk began in Athens, 508 BC — but every instrument this page measures (open data, civic tech, verification at platform scale) was born after the world went online. So the year is computed, not felt, from one assumption stated plainly: the infrastructure of verified governance has been built since 1991, and continues at the average pace it has held since. Each dial below is scored 0–1 from the named source; their weighted mean is how far the sun has risen. Extrapolate the remaining distance at that pace and you get the year above; the world as a whole reads ≈ . (Pace the same dials from Athens instead and dawn lands near 3860 — the assumption is the lever, which is why we publish it.) Values marked seed are coarse first estimates, placed honestly and waiting for the Watch to replace them with cited measurements. Disagree with a score? Good — that is the point of publishing them.

What moved the year

This sunrise is not inevitable — every entry below moves the year. A standing watch over the world's epistemic weather: deliberation experiments, verification infrastructure, transparency wins — and, deliberately, the evidence against: every force pushing dawn further away gets filed too, and pushes the year back out. A sunrise that only ever gets closer is a marketing widget.
